IMPLEMENTATION TIPS:

Year One Products

STORMWATER FLYER FOR RESIDENTS:

  • Mail flyer with an already scheduled town mailing to reduce mailing costs
  • Exhibit extra flyers with the tabletop display

STORMWATER TABLETOP DISPLAY:

  • Tabletop display folds for easy transport in black carry bag
  • Stormwater posters are laminated for durability and long-time use
  • Exhibit extra flyers and mail-in surveys in front of the display
  • Use tote bag to transport two brochure holders, extra flyers and survey postcards
  • Circulate display to locations such as town hall, library, schools, and town events

STORMWATER SURVEY:

  • Survey is included in the flyer
  • 200 additional survey postcards are also provided
  • Two umbrellas, imprinted with the stormwater logo, are provided for the survey raffle
  • Collating the surveys and conducting the raffle is your responsibility

Year Two Products

STORMWATER LESSON PLAN FOR 5th or 6th GRADE:

  • Please provide these materials to your school system
  • Table of Contents of Lesson Plan:
    • Introduction
    • Stormwater Matters Master Lesson Plan
    • Assessment Materials for Master Lesson Plan including Writing Assignments, Stormwater Survey, Stormwater Word Search
    • Teacher’s Background Information including Vocabulary List, Teacher’s Guide to Using the Maps, Discussion on Why Stormwater Matters, Storm Drains, Stormwater Education Resources on the Web
    • Supplemental Lesson Ideas
  • Teachers are welcome to copy and distribute these materials, but they may only be used within your community’s school system

STORMWATER POSTER CONTEST:

  • Determine your poster contest deadline
  • Judging the posters is the community’s responsibility – your local stormwater committee may be an obvious candidate to act as your panel of judges
  • Judging criteria include: clarity and persuasiveness of message, quality of work, creativity, compliance with the contest guidelines
  • It is recommended that all poster entries and winners be displayed in a public place
  • Award certificates for first, second, third place and two honorable mentions are provided
  • It is recommended that these award certificates be presented at a public meeting such as at a Selectmen’s Meeting
  • Some communities are creating their own additional awards, such as bank certificates contributed by a local bank, but that is solely up to the discretion of each community

Year Three Products

MEDIA TOOLKIT:

  • The press releases are intended to serve as a series on stormwater topics that you can sequentially submit to the local newspapers and cable stations
  • The press release templates are intended to be modified – copy the digital file on to your system and edit as needed
  • All template areas in underlined bold must be customized to your community
  • The templates may also be further modified according to your needs and situation

STORMWATER POWERPOINT PROGRAM:

  • “Talking Points” have been provided to aid in the delivery of the PowerPoint Program
  • The PowerPoint Program can be delivered to any audience of any background or age by tailoring your comments to the knowledge level of your audience
  • Please only present this PowerPoint Program in your community
  • Consider making handouts available at the PowerPoint program presentation, such as the Year 1 flyer, and display the Year 1 tabletop

STORMWATER MATTERS BANNER:

  • Display at PowerPoint presentation, stormwater summit, town events, meetings, etc.

STORMWATER SUMMIT TIPS:

  • It is recommended that you organize a Stormwater Summit for your community
  • The Summit Agenda may include: delivery of the PowerPoint Program, a speaker to explain what your community is doing to comply with the Stormwater Phase II regulations, a discussion on any proposed local stormwater and erosion control bylaws, and a question and answer session
  • Potential Summit speakers include representatives from the department of public works, conservation commission, board of health, etc.
  • Be sure to advertise the Stormwater Summit – use the summit press release in the media toolkit – contact the local newspapers and cable station and use any other means of meeting notification
  • Film the Stormwater Summit so that it can be aired on your local cable station
